About the Arts Council of Northumberland

The mandate of the Arts Council of Northumberland is to enhance contacts and interaction within the artistic and cultural community in the County of Northumberland, Ontario, Canada, and to promote arts, culture and heritage events throughout the county and the region.

The ACN began in the fall of 2004 as an initiative of the Art Gallery of Northumberland, funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. In the beginning, the Council was governed by a broad membership consensus in a cooperative, grassroots fashion; but it became apparent to the members who took part regularly in the meetings that a tighter executive structure was needed to carry on. As a result, an interim executive is now taking the initiative to build an effective Arts Council, patterned after similar organizations in neighboring Hastings, Prince Edward and Peterborough counties. The name change from the original Northumberland Coalition For Culture to Arts Council Of Northumberland reflects this new focus.

So far, membership in the Arts Council has been open to arts, culture and heritage organizations only. But to become more inclusive of the whole arts community, the interim executive has decided to extend membership to individual artists, as do the arts councils in the neighbouring regions.

The Arts Council of Northumberland meets the third Monday of every month, 7:00 p.m., at rotating locations throughout the County.

If you as an individual artist or your organization would like to be a part of this vibrant, cultural initiative, please contact us by calling the 905-372-0333 or email artsinfo@northumberlandarts.ca for further information and meeting locations.
