We Live Here, a photo book for the NUW A fundraiser for the Northumberland United Way (NUW), We Live Here is a unique collection of Northumberland County photographs made by members of the Northumberland Photography Club. Please vote for your favourite images by leaving comments! The images with the most comments will be included in the We Live Here book to be published, August 2011. Proceeds from sales of this book will be donated to the NUW to support their member agencies in our community. How you can you help? Please review our photographs!

The committee organizing the 2011 Ontario Heritage Conference that will be held in Cobourg from June 3rd to June 5th are holding a photo contest.  All entries must be delivered to the above address by 4:00pm on Friday May 27, 2011.

Shimmy Belly Dance presents The Coyote, The Hare & The Eclipse Mayan Mythology Madness,  Friday, June 3rd at 7:00pm at the Capitol, Port Hope

A pack of not very clever Coyotes attempt to hunt a pair of sneaky Hares. Two run off in the wrong direction. One follows a Hare only to be convinced by the wily creature that the sky is falling and the only safe place is hold up is a boul­der. Once the Coyote is focussed on the rock, the Hare frolics away. The last Coyote is outwitted when a Hare reveals a plan to eat the moon's cheese flavoured reflection. The only thing that is in their way is the water. Coyote drinks and drinks until she has a stomach ache and the Hare bounds off leav­ing Coyote writhing in pain. Under the beautiful night sky - Dragon spies the beautiful shiny Moon and takes her home to be worshipped - Will the Sunset Goddess be able to teach the Dragon to share her glorious rays? Tickets $15 Adults, $8 Kids

 

Northumberland Learning Connection presents Opera brown-bag lunch talks. These popular talks are returning for the 2010-2011 Metropolitan Opera season.  Bring your lunch for a half-hour talk, one hour before the Saturday afternoon Metropolitan Opera HD broadcasts. Brown-bag talks start one hour ahead of each opera broadcast, upstairs at the Cameco Capitol Arts Centre, Port Hope. (Start times vary for each opera) . HD at the Met - Verdi’s Il Travatore - June 4th, 1:00 pm at the Capitol, Port Hope  David McVicar's stirring production of Verdi's intense drama premiered in the 2008-09 season. James Levine leads this revival, starring four ex­traordinary singers—Sondra Radvanovsky, Dolora Zajick, Marcelo Alvarez, and Dmitri Hvorostovsky—in what might be the composer's most melodically rich score.

 

The Summer Exhibition Open House on Saturday, June 4 11:00-5:00 and Sunday, June 5 11:00-5:00. Artists include: Jacqueline Staikos, Erwin Rummel, Jeanette Bartosik, Yusun Ha, Sally McKay-LePage, Northumberland Soapworks, Sharon Day, Dawn Miller, Dave Hubbs, Les Robling, Christine Benson, Yvonne Barker, Avonquil, Carol Maranda, Jackson Creek Press, Patricia Schevers-Papp, Greg McHarg, Heather Downie. The gallery is bursting with colour and will be featuring unique glass, sterling silver and beaded jewellery, photography, paintings and mixed media from Northumberland County artists. "Women Who Wood II" opens Saturday June 4th, 2011 with an opening reception from 2-4 pm, at the Colborne Art Gallery and runs until July 10, 2011. Gallery Hours are Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 pm. During Apple Blossom Tyme (May 28-29) the Gallery will open at 10 am each day. Please join these women at their opening and also enjoy a selection of new works by the members of The Colborne Art Gallery.

 

The Gallery Choir of The Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Toronto, directed by Stephanie Martin, will perform works by Tallis, Palestrina, Bach, and Willan on Saturday, June 4, 2011, at 7 pm at Trinity United Church in Cobourg.

jazzpoems at the ganny - The All-Canadian Jazz Festival Port Hope presents musician and poet Gary Barwin for a special performance at The Ganaraska Hotel, 30 Ontario Street, Port Hope, on Wednesday June 8 at 7:30 pm.

Gary Barwin is known for lively, humourous and dynamic performances. His music and writing have been published and performed throughout the US, Canada and in Japan. Barwin is the author of many books of poetry and fiction, published by Coach House Press, Mercury Press, and BookThug. He holds a PhD in music composition from SUNY in Buffalo.

His music has been performed by The Vancouver Chamber Choir, The Bach-Elgar Choir, The Burdocks, and The Windtunnel Saxophone Quartet. His work has been commissioned and broadcast by the CBC.

. Admission is FREE.

Alice Vander Vennen Workshop - Finding a New Story, Working with Found Objects Friday, July 15, 5-8:30 pm. Saturday, July 16, 10-4 pm. In this time of harvest, this workshop will incorporate natural objects with textiles. If stones could talk what story would they tell? And if branches could dance, what would be their pose? What happens when we incorporate fabrics, found objects and natural materials? We will work through the logistics and creative magic of realizing an exciting new art piece that brings out the voice of nature.

Stephen Sondheim's Company Wednesday, June 15th 7:00 PM at the Capitol, Port Hope. Winning Best Musical, Book for Musical, Original Score, Lyrics, Direction of a Musical.One of the biggest names of Broadway is coming to the Capitol Theatre Shot live at the Lincoln Centre. Neil Patrick Harris leads the all-star cast which includes Patti LuPone, Stephen Colbert, Jon Cryer, Christina Hendricks; Craig Bierko and Martha Plimpton.

 

The Caramel House, A Comedy by Alan Bright July 21st to August 6th, at the Capitol, Port Hope. Set in a small town during the seventies The Caramel House is the story of how a closely knit family reacts when son brings a Chinese home for Easter dinner.

 

The Elephant Man. The Northumberland Players is set to reopen its doors in the Firehall theatre, Cobourg, with the Bernard Pomerance play The Elephant Man on June 24, 25, 26, 30, July 1, 2. The winner of several Tony awards including Best Play is based on the life of John Merrick, a horribly disfigured young man in nineteenth century London, struggling to achieve his dream of becoming a man.

All shows will be at 7:30pm. No Matinees. Tickets are $20.00

The Words and Music 2011 season continues on Friday June 10 and Saturday June 11 at Victoria Hall, Cobourg, when Brad Halls is joined by his special guests The Royals big band and their featured vocalist Tanya Wills in their Tribute to the Arrangers. Songs are just notes on a page until a musical arranger takes the music and creates the instrumental or vocal arrangements that make the song a classic. The band and singers will give you famous arrangements of great songs by arrangers such as Nelson Riddle, Neal Hefti, Billy May, Gordon Jenkins and many more. Enjoy the best of big band jazz.

 

The Shelter Valley Shape-Note Singers sing on the second Sunday of each month. Our next singing will take place Sunday, June 12th, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at the Grafton Community Centre, 135 Old Danforth Road in Grafton. Please join us for some wonderful singing - and, as always, feel free to bring a friend or two!

 

Sweet Water Country Music Series 2011 June 12, at Victoria Hall, Cobourg- Don Cochrane. In 1971, Don Cochrane joined Ralph Carlson & Country Mile as bass player. His first album was produced by Barry Brown and included Whistle on the River; Hey Uncle Tom, Old Bill Jones, Manitoba and The Hobo's Lullaby . Don formed his own band Sweet Clover and in 1978 he recorded his second album to rave reviews. Don travelled extensively across Canada and has appeared on CBC specials including The Tommy Hunter Show.

What’s On And Coming – At The Shows, Exhibitions and Tours


Veronica Derry’s work is currently being exhibited at the new Edward Jones office at 609 William Street (across from the old General Foods plant, right beside the new John's Junction restaurant ). Katie Flindall's (www.moonhouseart.com) wonderful illustrative paintings are also on display. Please drop in, Mon - Fri. during office hours, 9 – 5 (905-372-8151).  The exhibit runs until the end of June.

 

Barb Smith Paintings on Display: Vito's Restaurant in Colborne has her art displayed on their walls as well. This is an ongoing display. All paintings are for sale.
