What’s Coming – At The
Lectures, Readings, Book Launches and Awards
Gail Bowen Book Launch, Monday, August 16th, 7 pm – Mary J. Benson Branch, Port Hope. Mystery writer Gail Bowen returns to PHPL to launch her newest Joanne Kilbourn title The Nesting Dolls. Gail is a first-rate writer, a captivating reader, and a fascinating person with whom to spend a summer evening, even when she has murder on her mind.
"Captives of Minara, a suspense novel by Eric E. Wright, has won the award for the best suspense/mystery novel and was finalist as best contemporary novel in the Word Guild Canadian Christian Writing Contest. In this sequel to award-winning, The Lightning File, journalist Josh Radley travels to Pakistan, the scene of a childhood trauma. Under assignment to write about the excavation of a 4500 year old lost city, he stumbles onto a gang not only smuggling stolen antiquities but kidnapping women and children. The novel lays bare the dark world of human trafficking and the plight of women in a patriarchal society."
What’s Coming? - At The
Theatre And Dance
Port Hope Festival Theatre at the Capitol. The Music Man, the Broadway musical by Meredith Willson. August 5th – August 29th. The story follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize – this despite the fact he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen.
Twelfth Night - Driftwood Theatre is again performing in Victoria Park, Cobourg, on August 6. All performances are Pay What You Can; the suggested donation is $15 per person. A quote from Richard Ouzonian in The Toronto Star, "Shakespeare on a classy shoestring... Driftwood could teach most of this province's summer Shakespeare theatres (yes, even that one in Stratford) a thing or two about simplicity and clarity". Different loosely assorted groups have in the past had a group picnic before the play, but last year we made a change because every other event kept being rained out! The suggestion therefore is that you bring your own, personal picnic, in case it does rain. (That way, if it is rained out, no-one ends up with no dinner except perhaps a plate of brownies!) Bring a chair, picnic, drink, and layers of clothing! Let's gather around 6.30 pm. The play starts at 7.30 pm.

The Colborne Art Gallery - Open Fields and Gardens, a show by guest artist Susan Fisher. “Where ever I wander or travel, fields and gardens provoke many layers of sensations: the sensation of rhythms and musical sounds; the sense of touch and of movement; of course the sensation of colour – brilliantly stunning or quietly muted. Reaching into the scenes – I extract fragments and weave them together into my interpretation of Nature’s oeuvre. Encaustic allows the composition a dynamic wherein the elements can move visually as they would in reality as we experience it.”
