Alice VanDer Vennen -“The journey of life reflects a capability of piecing together many views of the world, activities and relationships as an expression of one’s vision. I attempt to reflect this as I work with multiple materiality, fabric, branches, wire, copper, paper and ceramic shards as part of a visual language suggesting a story. The story is part women’s history, the meaning of objects in everyday life and the collection and sorting of intriguing things. I strive to have my art speak as a celebration of the human spirit in relation to its Creator, whether from secret spaces or the most flamboyant expressions. The works form a record of my own journey in life.”

Finding Farley, Tuesday, March 23rd, 7 pm, Mary J. Benson Branch, Port Hope, An invitation from Farley Mowat began filmmakers Leanne Allison's and Karsten Heuer's journey overland from Calgary to Cape Breton. The NFB film Finding Farley follows the couple and their two-year-old son as they retrace the iconic writer's literary footsteps from Owls in the Family to People of the Deer. The Cobourg and District Historical Society, Tuesday, March 23rd in the Citizens' Forum, Victoria Hall. The speaker will be Walter Lewis, a well-known expert on the maritime history of the Great Lakes. The title of his presentation is The Royal Tour of 1860 providing a glimpse of the Prince of Wales' tour on the steamboat Kingston during his stop in Cobourg.  On Monday, March 15, 2010, Cobourg Town Council unanimously passed a motion to: proclaim the weekend of April 15th to April 18th as "Poetry Weekend in Cobourg" and proclaim Thursday, April 15th to be "Young Poets' Day in Cobourg." James Pickersgill announced that from Thursday, April 15 to Sunday, April 18, 2010, the 2nd annual P o e t r y’z O w n Weekend Festival. April is National Poetry Month. Terence Dickinson, Tuesday, April 20th, 7 pm, Mary J. Benson Branch, Port Hope. Canada’s foremost author / astronomer makes a return visit to show us the rings of Saturn in real time. Terence Dickinson, author of Nightwatch and numerous other astronomy titles, editor of SkyNews magazine and website, and go-to guy for all things astronomy related, amazed us with his Tour of the Universe in October. He returns to the Mary J. Benson Branch in April. This time he’s bringing his telescope to give attendees the opportunity to view the rings of Saturn and other celestial bodies, weather permitting, from Rotary Park (just south of the Library parking lot). After the viewing, Terence Dickinson will once again wow us with his knowledge and his unbelievably breathtaking slides in the Program Room, followed by book sales and signing courtesy of Furby House Books, which donates 15% of sales to Your Library. The Long Weekend by Norman Foster, DINNER THEATRE at The Best Western Cobourg Inn and Convention Centre, Cobourg, April 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25, 30, May 1 (matinee and evening) and 2. A 15-year friendship is tested when two couples retreat to a remote weekend cottage. As hilarious truths and deceptions are revealed, the sparks begin to fly. This biting and inventive comedy offers plenty of surprises and twists along the way. The Long Weekend is a tremendously funny play. Its richly-drawn characters and sparkling dialogue are more than a match for anything that we've seen from Norm Foster before. The play serves up multitudes of laughs, showing us again why Foster is Canada's most produced playwright.

TEA AT FIVE, By Matthew Lombardo, Sunday, May 16, 3:00 PM, at the Capitol, Port Hope, Directed by Robert Latimer-Cornell, Based on her book Me: Stories of My Life, TEA AT FIVE is an intimate look at the life of the legendary Broadway and screen actress Katharine Hepburn. The first act takes place in September 1938 when Hepburn is 31 years old. Despite Broadway appearances and her first Oscar (MORNING GLORY 1933), she has just been labeled "box office poison" after a series of film flops. She is awaiting a call to see if she has won the part of Scarlett O’Hara in a film called GONE WITH THE WIND. With her professional future in doubt, she contemplates her childhood in Hartford, her education and her start in show business. The second act takes place in February 1983, after Hepburn was injured in a car crash. Parkinson's disease has left her voice shaking, her hand clutching a cane, but her eyes still shining with intelligence, wit and the wisdom that informs a long life lived to the fullest. Now the 76 year-old star reflects on the triumphs of her career and her heart-breaking romance with Spencer Tracy. Simon Keenlyside and Marlis Petersen bring two of Shakespeare’s unforgettable characters to life in this new production of Ambroise Thomas’s Hamlet. For the role of Ophelia, the French composer created an extended mad scene that is among the greatest in opera.

COC Opera Guilds can only be formed with the blessing of the Canadian Opera Company. There are quite a few - amongst them Kingston, of which Thais Donald used to be president, Peterborough, Oakville, and one in upper New York State. Assuming enough people join there are many benefits such as discounted tickets, access to the Friends' Lounge at the opera house, arranged buses to and from the opera, speakers.

The Oriana Singers present CLOSE TO HOME on March 27, at 7:30pm at Trinity United Church, Cobourg. In this joint concert with the Concert Band of Cobourg, the band and choir will perform a variety of original compositions and arrangements by local composers including Steven M. Port Hope Friends Of Music - Augustin Hadelich & Ian Parker Date: Sunday, March 28, 3:00 p.m. Cameco Capitol Arts Centre, Port Hope. Augustin Hadelich has performed with international orchestras, and given recitals in Tokyo, Osaka, La Jolla, CA, the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. “Hadelich is in touch with the sunny side of a violin. He can dig in; he can probe; he can make the instrument bark when the music calls for it. But his default seems to be the warm lyrical joy of lilting melody.”(Washington Post)

Ian Parker has performed across the U.S., Europe, Israel and Canada, and has won the Grand Prize at the Canadian National Music Festival, the Corpus Christi International Competition, and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra Competition.

Armida – Gioachino Rossini, May 1, 1:00 pm, at the Capitol, Port Hope Expected Running time: 4 hours, 19 minutes, 2 intermissions. This mythical story of a sorceress who enthralls men in her island prison has inspired operatic settings by a multitude of composers, including Gluck, Haydn, and Dvorák. Renée Fleming stars in the title role of Rossini’s version, opposite no fewer than six tenors. Tony Award winner Mary Zimmerman returns to direct this new production of a work she describes as “a buried treasure, a box of jewels.”  The fanciful and magical tale, Zimmerman says, “has an epic, enchanted quality and a tremendous visual element.”

Choral Legacy is a women's choir that sings music in three or four part harmony. Our musical selections encompass a wide variety of styles, including jazz standards, show tunes, and popular music. The chorus rehearses on Monday nights under the direction of Shasta Morey, at Baltimore United Church starting at 7:15 pm.

This from ACN member Chrissy Poutras:I am the owner of Spark Box Studio, a new artist studio and residency program in Picton, Ontario. We have recently launched an Emerging Artist Residency Award which gives young emerging artists the chance to participate in an artist residency free of charge for up to one week. Spirit of the Hills “A Northumberland Perspective” at the Campbellford Library, 98 Bridge Street East, in

Campbellford from January 14th to March 31. Opening Reception on Tuesday, January 19th from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm.The show features photographer Tom Groot who has captured the various visual pleasures our Northumberland County has to offer “as seen through the eyes of a newcomer”.

Spirit of the Hills ‘Mpumalanga Memories’ and features photographs taken by Jane Osmond during two mission trips to Mpumalanga Province in South Africa in 2008 and 2009. at the 100 Mile Diner, Warkworth.

Osmond’ photography demonstrates a broad palette of imagery: startling beauty, inexplicable joy, and overwhelming contrasts.  She saw startling beauty in the African people, especially the children, as well as in the wild animals in their natural habitat. Inexplicable joy burst forth in spontaneous a cappella singing and dancing even while these young people struggled to overcome adversity. There were overwhelming contrasts in the rich and the poor, in modern shopping malls and country markets, and in the beauty of the land. This African experience brought tears and laughter, sorrow and joy. Until February 28^th..

4th Line Theatre is accepting submissions for its 2010 New Play Competition.

The entry level for new projects is referred to as ‘seeding.’ Playwrights who have had at least one full-length work for the stage professionally produced are invited to submit story ideas, draft treatments or draft scenes of a proposed play project for seed funding. At a later date successful projects may be eligible for commissioning.  Submissions should reflect 4th Line Theatre’s mandate and mission: to preserve and promote our Canadian cultural heritage through the development and presentation of regionally-based, environmentally staged, historical dramas and to develop and present original Canadian works of the highest quality which explore regional themes, history and heritage. The closing date for submissions is April 23, 2010.
