What’s On – This Weekend And The Coming Week

Mysteries and More at the Cobourg Public Library. Free Friday films featuring classic crime and drama, tea and pastries All films start at 2:00 pm in the Rotary Room on the main floor. Entire fall schedule HERE  .

Steel Magnolias, Produced by Garth Holloway and Doreen Page, Directed by Chris M. Worsnop DINNER THEATRE at The Best Western Cobourg Inn and Convention Centre, Cobourg January 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31, February 5, 6 (matinee and evening) and 7, 2010. The story introduces us to a gaggle of gossiping ladies in a 1980's Louisiana small-town beauty parlour. The characters are familiar and engaging; truly hilarious in their joking as they cut up their local society with their biting yet honest insights, all the while fussing with their hair. The play swings between slap-your-sides comedy and dab-your-eyes tender moments. The ending is deeply moving; a skillfully crafted and lovingly evoked picture of kookiness and sisterhood.

Tribute to Frank Sinatra –m Featuring Vocalist Dave Statham and Swing Shift Big Band, Sunday January 24th, 2:00 PM, at the Park Playhouse, Cobourg, Tickets: $30 Plus GST

Swing Shift is firmly established as one of Ontario’s finest big bands and they have been wowing audiences with their “Tribute to Frank Sinatra” show, playing Frank’s greatest hits from his early days as a musical heart throb to his Vegas “Rat Pack” years, and they play Mr. Sinatra’s songs the way he intended them to be played.

Swing Shift Big Band was created in August, 1996 with the intent of preserving the timeless sounds of the big band era, and they have been entertaining all over Ontario from smaller intimate venues to crowds of over 6,000.  Once you hear this powerful band you will agree that the combination of 5 saxophones, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, piano, bass, drums and guitar along with their exceptionally talented vocalist Dave Statham belting out timeless classics like Come Fly With Me, My Kind of Town, Theme from New York New York and Luck Be A Lady to name a few, will make for a show you will not want to miss.

Mills, who is Chapel Organist at Trinity College School as well as Music Director at St Mark's Anglican Church, has used the programmes of one of his teachers, British recitalist Peter Hurford, as a guide for arranging the seventeen concerts.
Both the Hill, Norman and Beard organ at TCS, imported from England in 1965, and the 1986 Gabriel Kney (London, ON) tracker pipe organ at St Mark's are considered fine instruments for the interpretation of Bach's works. In particular, the Kney organ is based on small organs by Gottfried Silbermann, Bach's favourite builder, which Mills was able to study in Germany in 1992. Admission is free to all concerts, and further information is available at: www.tcs.on.ca/bach325<http://www.tcs.on.ca/bach325>

Following His Dark Materials, Coram Boy and War Horse, the National Theatre's latest spectacular family production is an exhilarating adventure story of survival and self-discovery based on a novel by Terry Pratchett. A parallel world, 1860. Two teenagers thrown together by a tsunami that has destroyed Mau’s village and left Daphne shipwrecked on his South Pacific island, thousands of miles from home. One wears next to nothing, the other a long white dress; neither speaks the other’s language; somehow they must learn to survive. As starving refugees gather, Daphne delivers a baby, milks a pig, brews beer and does battle with a mutineer. Mau fights cannibal Raiders, discovers the world is round and questions the reality of his tribe’s fiercely patriarchal gods. Together they come of age, overseen by a foul-mouthed parrot, as they discard old doctrine to forge a new Nation. Live music, thrilling dance and spectacular puppets combine to bring to life the spectacular and surprising world of Terry Pratchett's Nation on the National Theatre stage.

Spirit of the Hills “A Northumberland Perspective” at the Campbellford Library, 98 Bridge Street East, in

Campbellford from January 14th to March 31. Opening Reception on Tuesday, January 19th from 6:30 pm8:30 pm.The show features photographer Tom Groot who has captured the various visual pleasures our Northumberland County has to offer “as seen through the eyes of a newcomer”.

Spirit of the Hills ‘Mpumalanga Memories’ and features photographs taken by Jane Osmond during two mission trips to Mpumalanga Province in South Africa in 2008 and 2009. at the 100 Mile Diner, Warkworth.

Osmond’ photography demonstrates a broad palette of imagery: startling beauty, inexplicable joy, and overwhelming contrasts.  She saw startling beauty in the African people, especially the children, as well as in the wild animals in their natural habitat. Inexplicable joy burst forth in spontaneous a cappella singing and dancing even while these young people struggled to overcome adversity. There were overwhelming contrasts in the rich and the poor, in modern shopping malls and country markets, and in the beauty of the land. This African experience brought tears and laughter, sorrow and joy. Until February 28th.
