The Arts Council of Northumberland encourages creativity and raises the visibility of the artist and the arts community through advocacy, communications and leadership.

 

This newsletter covers theatre, music, lectures, films, workshops and exhibitions.

The Ontario Crafts Council’s Eastern-Ontario Feature within the 2010 Spring One of a Kind Show. This call is open to ALL craft-media artists in Eastern Ontario (not just OCC members), and it has an upcoming deadline of December 1st, 2009. A revised deadline of December 22, 2009 has been announced today for the 2010-2011 intake for the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Museums Assistance Program (MAP). Additional information on program changes, guidelines and application forms are available on the Department’s website at http://www.pch.gc.ca/pgm/pam-map/index-eng.cfm (English) and http://www.pch.gc.ca/pgm/pam-map/index-fra.cfm (French).

 

The ACN website now has a map of cultural attractions – galleries, theatres, museums - in Northumberland. It is a work in progress with the possibility of including studios, arts supplies stores and other ancillary businesses. Check it out HERE

With much grace and at considerable leisure, and a treat for romantics and those who take their poetry seriously, New Zealand director Jane Campion's gorgeously filmed "Bright Star" tells the story of the brief love affair between the gifted but early dead poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne. Ben Whishaw plays Keats with impeccable tragedy and Abbie Cornish portrays winningly the beautiful seamstress Fanny, whose passion is constrained only by the rigorous mores of the times.

What’s Coming – At The Lectures, Readings, Book Launches and Awards


Wootton - Moon Remembered,  Saturday, December 5,  2 pm to 4 p. m. at Furby House Books. Local author Donna Wootton will be signing copies of her latest book Moon Remembered, about her father lacrosse goalie Lloyd "Moon" Wootton. He played for Canada’s preeminent Peterborough team and was instrumental in winning the prestigious Mann Cup for lacrosse five years in a row.

 

Sinclair - Greenlegs - Saturday, December 12, 3 pm to 4 pm at Furby House Books, Port Hope. Children’s author Denman Sinclair, of Campbellcroft, will be   signing copies of his book Greenlegs. This beautifully illustrated, charming, chapter book is the story of a very young grasshopper, his insect friends and their adventures.

ARADIA ENSEMBLE, chorus and soloists with the 1742 Dublin version of Handel’s Messiah … Saturday December 5th, 8:00 p.m. at Port Hope United Church. The excitement is building for this evening, as we welcome conductor Kevin Mallon and soloists Laura Albino, Marion Newman, Nils Brown and Sean Watson to the wonderful acoustics of Port Hope United Church, where our 35-year history began. Following the unforgettable presentation of Messiah we will gather with the artists for refreshments and a Silent Auction of CDs, concert tickets and other memorabilia, many donated by the artists who have thrilled Friends of Music audiences over our first 35 years.  Bring your chequebook or credit card (visa or MasterCard) to do some Christmas shopping … we will also have gift certificates available for the rest of our 35th Anniversary Season. This from ACN member Chrissy Poutras:I am the owner of Spark Box Studio, a new artist studio and residency program in Picton, Ontario. We have recently launched an Emerging Artist Residency Award which gives young emerging artists the chance to participate in an artist residency free of charge for up to one week. Along with this opportunity we have also started building a resource site for emerging artists called the Emerging Artist Guide. Shelter Valley Folk Festival Unveils The Art Project Meet at 66 King Street East in Cobourg, Preview begins Thursday December 10th, at 6:30pm Shelter Valley Folk Festival unveils a special art collection in downtown Cobourg for one night only. Join us for an evening of live music, delicious sustenance, and the discovery of unique and wonderful works donated for a Silent Auction to close our 2009 fundraising campaign. The Art Project brings together works from Festival performers, local and national personalities, and well known local creators. The proceeds will help support the Festival’s year round activities including the “Artists in the Schools” program, Community Concert Series and Songwriters Showcase providing an opportunity for young talent through learning and experience.

 

Spirit of the Hills third visual arts show at its Showcase Gallery entitled, Join The Festive The show features lots of gift giving ideas in the form of paintings, photographs, sculpture, jewellery, and 3-D mixed media.   All media are original and created by Spirit of the Hills visual artists.  Regular hours: Friday, 1-4, Saturday, 10-4, Sunday 1-4. 

 

Colborne Art Gallery Annual Christmas, ALL THINGS BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL.  Gallery artists have been busy creating artworks, including smaller items and cards, for this seasonal exhibit. The show will run until Sunday December 20.

 

Pat Stanley:  FAULT LINES Paul Kane Gallery, Art Gallery of Northumberland, Cobourg “Cobourg artist Pat Stanley examines the tensions generated by the interaction of man-made and natural landscapes.  She uses experimental painting techniques and a mixture of both abstract and representational imagery to capture and communicate the effects of environmental stress on both urban and rural structures.  This exhibition in the Paul Kane Gallery gives the viewer an intimate space to contemplate this emerging artist's timely exploration of environmental interference and disintegration.”

Ad Hoc studio exhibition at AGN Port Hope to November 22. The Art Gallery of Northumberland in Port Hope is pleased to present its latest exhibition of paintings by the adult students of the AD HOC studio. These talented artists produce vibrant and eclectic works under the mentorship of  Port Hope artist, Fiona Crangle. The exhibition runs until November 22 at the AGN’s Port Hope location, 60 Walton St. Port Hope. The gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday 11 to 5 and Sunday 1 to 4.
