Vintage Film Festival includes something special for Port Hope fans.  The 17th annual Marie Dressler Foundation Vintage Film Festival running Oct. 23 through 25, traditionally held both at Cobourg's Victoria Hall and Port Hope's Capitol Theatre, offers something special for its Port Hope theatre-goers. Mysteries and More at the Cobourg Public Library. Free Friday films featuring classic crime and drama, tea and pastries All films start at 2:00 pm in the Rotary Room on the main floor.  Manhattan Murder Mystery, 1993. Written and directed by Woody Allen. Stars Woody Allen, Alan Alda, Angelica Houston and Diane Keaton. The charm of New York, the wit of Woody Allen and maybe, a murder.

Self-taught as an artist, San Murata has worked his way up to a position as one of the most respected illustrator designers in Canada. He has worked as an Art Director for CTV, Global and CityTV in Toronto.

One Day Blues Revue - zapp promotions’ first One Day Blues Revue, Saturday October 3rd, 2:00 pm at the Concert Hall, Victoria Hall, Cobourg. Headlining the day will be 2 blues greats from Chicago, Melvin Taylor and Studebaker John. Melvin has been called "stunning" by Jazztimes Magazine and was a real crowd pleaser at his last Cobourg appearance.

Singer / songwriter Susan Aglukark is one of Canada's most unique artists and a leading voice in Canadian music. Blending the Inuktitut and English languages with contemporary pop music arrangements to tell the stories of her people, the Inuit of Arctic Canada, Susan’s clear voice and thoughtful lyrics have won her several Juno Awards. Dawn Langstroth’s passion for singing is instinctive. Growing up in a musical home as the daughter of  Anne Murray and Bill Langstroth, Dawn was quick to join in school musicals and choirs. Focusing on songwriting for the past five years, she has composed an impressive catalogue of songs and has already claimed a strong foothold in the Canadian music scene.

What’s Coming? - At The Concerts and Opera


The Solina Road Band at Coldsprings Hall on Fri. Oct. 9th at 7:30 P.M. Admission is $10 at the door. Canteen at intermission. The band features popular musicians, Lynn and Larry Hornsby, Rob Laing, and Al Kirby. The music encompasses bluegrass, gospel, traditional, contemporary and instrumental.

 

Puccini Tosca Live From The Met at the Capitol, October 10th, 1:00  pm. “Tosca combines Puccini’s glorious musical inspiration with the melodramatic vitality of one of the great Hitchcock films,” says Met Music Director James Levine, who conducts this new production. The opera tells the story of three people—a famous opera singer, a free-thinking painter, and a sadistic chief of police—caught in a net of love and politics. Soprano Karita Mattila, recently seen in this season’s Live in HD presentation of Salome, sings the title role for the first time outside her native Finland. Luc Bondy, acclaimed for his imaginative theater and opera productions, directs. The cast also includes Marcelo Álvarez as Cavaradossi and Juha Uusitalo as Scarpia.

The Cobourg Art Club has a display of paintings upstairs at The Mill Restaurant, Cobourg --an eclectic mix of original work in all media and all members participate. The show is ongoing and changes seasonally.

Bacchus Beckons, On Friday, October 30, the Victoria Hall Volunteers will present their seventh biennial Wine Tasting Event.  Bacchus Beckons is a timely opportunity to discover new wines for your own holiday entertaining.  From 8:00 - 10:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall, guests will sample not only fine wines selected by local sommelier Bruce Maclean, but also an assortment of wonderful cheeses of the world. Entertainment for the evening will be provided by Shelagh Purcell playing the grand piano.  There will also be a silent auction.  Tickets are $35.00 and are available from Victoria Hall Volunteer members or the Concert Hall box office at 905-372-2210.
