Arts Headlines

ACO Port Hope House Tour showcases heritage buildings. In its 44th year, you might think finding new unique heritage buildings in Port Hope to feature on the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario (ACO) Port Hope House Tour would be getting challenging. Luckily Port Hope is brimming with interesting architecture, said Susan Carmichael, house tour chair.

The Lions Club of Brighton Annual Juried Art Show, September 25, 26 and 27. Held in the 7,500 square foot gymnasium of the local high school, the show typically hosts over 30 artists who each have a minimum of 128 square feet of display area. Admission to the public is free. The show commences on Friday evening with a Gala invitation event involving music and refreshments. Brighton also hosts the well known Applefest street celebration on the same weekend drawing many visitors to Apple Country.

 

The Colborne Art Gallery group show with Christine Benson, Bill Rowland, & Janita Wiersma, and gallery artists; opening with the artists Saturday, September 26th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at the Gallery. The show will be on through November 8th, 2009.

 

The Ontario Crafts Council presents the 2009: OCC Eastern Gathering A social event and potluck for members and spouses. Hosted by Susan McDonald, www.practicallypotty.com Come join us in Port Hope on Saturday September 26th, 4:00 – 7:00 pm, 4166 4th Line, Port Hope, for an afternoon of camaraderie, food and fun. Mickey Rooney’s 89th birthday tour! Mickey Rooney and Jan Rooney bring their acclaimed off Broadway musical: Let’s Put On A Show! Saturday, September 26th, at the Park Tickets: $55 Plus GST Doors: 7:00PM Show: 7:30PM
“Let’s Put On A Show!” is an autobiographical musical, highlighted with film clips, humor and anecdotal memories which enjoyed a successful run Off-Broadway in New York.  Mickey is excited to share the stage with his wife of 31 years, the singer/actress Jan Rooney. Drawing on a rich 80 plus year career, the musical numbers are broad ranged and are taken from Mickey’s films, some original tunes and Jan's vast repertoire, including her tribute to Patsy Cline. Additionally the show features a moving tribute to Mickey’s famous co-star from his days at MGM, Judy Garland.

 

Films at The Capitol – Saturday, 8:00 pm. Nora Eprhon’s new film, Julie & Julia, is about two women who discover their creative life through a rather conventional hobby: They start cooking. The movie is based on Julie Powell’s book of the same name and on Julia Child’s memoir My Life in France (co-authored with Alex Prud’homme)—stories that obviously resonate with the writer-director.

Increasingly obsessed with ghosts and the afterlife, Edward's is a rather lonely existence until he meets Clarence, the latest recruit to the home, a retired magician with a liberating streak of anarchy. Is There Anybody There? tells the surprising, touching story of this odd couple - a boy and an old man - facing life together, with Edward learning to live in the moment and Clarence coming to terms with the past."

What’s Coming? - At The Concerts and Opera


Port Hope Friends of Music - Angčle Dubeau & La Pietŕ, Friday, October 2, 8:00 p.m. Cameco Capitol Arts Centre, Program: Myths & Legends. As it is the case with all art forms, music is a language. It communicates feelings, emotions. But its power of evocation is such that it may give rise to recollections, dreams, images.

 

One Day Blues Revue - zapp promotions’ first One Day Blues Revue, Saturday October 3rd, 2:00 pm at the Concert Hall, Victoria Hall, Cobourg. Headlining the day will be 2 blues greats from Chicago, Melvin Taylor and Studebaker John. Melvin has been called "stunning" by Jazztimes Magazine and was a real crowd pleaser at his last Cobourg appearance.

 

SUSAN AGLUKARK / DAWN LANGSTROTH, Saturday, October 3rd at 8 pm Tickets $39, at the Capitol Port Hope. An evening of incredible Canadian talent. Singer / songwriter Susan Aglukark is one of Canada's most unique artists and a leading voice in Canadian music. Blending the Inuktitut and English languages with contemporary pop music arrangements to tell the stories of her people, the Inuit of Arctic Canada, Susan’s clear voice and thoughtful lyrics have won her several Juno Awards. Dawn Langstroth’s passion for singing is instinctive. Growing up in a musical home as the daughter of  Anne Murray and Bill Langstroth, Dawn was quick to join in school musicals and choirs. Focusing on songwriting for the past five years, she has composed an impressive catalogue of songs and has already claimed a strong foothold in the Canadian music scene.

 

The Solina Road Band at Coldsprings Hall on Fri. Oct. 9th at 7:30 P.M. Admission is $10 at the door. Canteen at intermission. The band features popular musicians, Lynn and Larry Hornsby, Rob Laing, and Al Kirby. The music encompasses bluegrass, gospel, traditional, contemporary and instrumental.

 

Puccini Tosca Live From The Met at the Capitol, October 10th, 1:00  pm. “Tosca combines Puccini’s glorious musical inspiration with the melodramatic vitality of one of the great Hitchcock films,” says Met Music Director James Levine, who conducts this new production. The opera tells the story of three people—a famous opera singer, a free-thinking painter, and a sadistic chief of police—caught in a net of love and politics. Soprano Karita Mattila, recently seen in this season’s Live in HD presentation of Salome, sings the title role for the first time outside her native Finland. Luc Bondy, acclaimed for his imaginative theater and opera productions, directs. The cast also includes Marcelo Álvarez as Cavaradossi and Juha Uusitalo as Scarpia.

We think that a tree filled with local, original artwork would raise a lot of money for this cause as well as bring attention to local artists and their work.

Kingsleys Korner: FALL SHOWING. Two members of the Brighton Arts Council, lovingly known as the twins will be featured at Kingsley’s Korner for the fall. Marilyn Cundal and Carolyn Hughes, sisters, have been artists since childhood. Each presents a nuance of their charming personality in each work of art. The acrylic or oil renditions seem to convey the joy they feel for the subject matter, for life and their pleasure when capturing a scene. Most of the art is available for sale during the show. Susan MacDonald, textile artist. Her work is on display and for sale at the AGN gift shop at the Upstairs Gallery, Port Hope. .  

 

Susan Caron in September at the Rainbow Cinemas at 80 Front St. Toronto. For the Toronto film festival and at the Port Hope Jazz festival. For the last week of September through the month of October she  will be showing my Water colours at the Buttermilk Cafe as well as continuing my showings and sales at Munro's After Five down town Cobourg. I have recently swapped out the art that is showing in Rick Norlock's office.

 

Evelyn Van Hoekelen, Campbellford Public Library. A number of the paintings featured were inspired by her visit to Bon Echo Park.  Others find her focus more on colour and design. Evelyn has been working in oils for the last ten years, taking courses, private lessons, and working in her home studio. Her studio and home are full of paintings and drawings. Until the end of September.

 

The Cobourg Art Club has a display of paintings upstairs at The Mill Restaurant, Cobourg --an eclectic mix of original work in all media and all members participate. The show is ongoing and changes seasonally.

Bacchus Beckons, On Friday, October 30, the Victoria Hall Volunteers will present their seventh biennial Wine Tasting Event.  Bacchus Beckons is a timely opportunity to discover new wines for your own holiday entertaining.  From 8:00 - 10:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall, guests will sample not only fine wines selected by local sommelier Bruce Maclean, but also an assortment of wonderful cheeses of the world. Entertainment for the evening will be provided by Shelagh Purcell playing the grand piano.  There will also be a silent auction.  Tickets are $35.00 and are available from Victoria Hall Volunteer members or the Concert Hall box office at 905-372-2210.
