This idea-rich play probes the concerns of old and young, liberal and conservative, and the secular and religious. The "Mecca" metaphor speaks to the relationship between imagination and freedom. South Africa's pre-eminent playwright Athol Fugard explores the backwaters of human creativity in this inquiry into the transformative power of art. Winner of the 1999 Audie Award for Best Theatrical Production and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Play. “Poetry may seem irrelevant to a person's life, but people die every day for want of the nourishment poetry can give them.” ~ William Carlos Williams.
