Guys and Dolls, Friday, August 7th- 30th, performance times HERE, at the Capitol. Port Hope

Set in Damon Runyon's mythical New York City, this oddball romantic comedy - considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy – soars with the spirit of Broadway as it introduces us to a cast of vivid characters who have become legends in the canon: Sarah Brown, the upright but uptight "mission doll," out to reform the evildoers of Time Square; Sky Masterson, the slick, high-rolling gambler who woos her on a bet and ends up falling in love; Adelaide, the chronically ill nightclub performer whose condition is brought on by the fact she's been engaged to the same man for 14 years; and Nathan Detroit, her devoted fiancé, desperate as always to find a spot for his infamous floating crap game.
Everything works out in the end, thanks to the machinations of Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling's hilarious, fast-paced book and Frank Loesser's bright, brassy, immortal score, which takes us from the heart of
Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even into the sewers of New York City. Funny and romantic, “Guys And Dolls” is ideal for audiences and performers of any age. This is why Broadway was born! –Newsweek. "One of the funniest and melodious shows in seasons. Everything about it seems practcially perfect." –Variety. "It's the perfect musical comedy." -Daily News

What’s Coming? - At The Theatre And Dance

The summer season at the Fourth Line Theatre HERE

Ron James, Saturday August 22nd, 8:00 pm at the Park Playhouse, Cobourg. Tickets: $50 (taxes included)  DON'T WAIT - The New Ron James show is taking over the Friday Night Airfarce spot (Fri 8pm, CBC).Coming off the filming of an unprecedented fifth CBC-TV comedy special, Canada’s busiest and best-selling comedian RON JAMES takes to the road with a new "gut-bustingly, knee-slappingly funny" 90-minute rant MENTAL AS ANYTHING.

Whether wrestling with society’s accelerated rate of change, stumbling on nostril drooling bull moose during forest hikes, or experiencing the virtues of backyard composting and its promise of immortality, James brings a ‘foot soldier’s perspective from the trenches’ in our collective march through Life’s bright fury.

From camping in leaky canvas-walled tent trailers in that idyllic summer of 1969 … to a man at the crossroads of mid-life, James traces a trajectory across the landscape of contemporary culture, satirizing everything from button-down-rule-righteous life insurance agents to sanctimonious eco-freaks ... just ‘connecting the dots’ while trying his best to clarify the chaos of this new century we’re all walking through before he goes "Mental As Anything" himself!

South Africa's pre-eminent playwright Athol Fugard explores the backwaters of human creativity in this inquiry into the transformative power of art. Winner of the 1999 Audie Award for Best Theatrical Production and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Play. “Poetry may seem irrelevant to a person's life, but people die every day for want of the nourishment poetry can give them.” ~ William Carlos Williams.
