The Arts Council Of Northumberland is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life within our community by developing widespread appreciation of, support for and involvement in the arts and culture.

 

This newsletter covers theatre, music, lectures, films, workshops and exhibitions.

ACN Member Of The Week

Elizabeth Wilson.  Elizabeth Wilson studied painting and sculpture in Oakland, California and at Central Technical School in Toronto. She also studied with John Gould and Richard Gorman at the Toronto School of Art. She is currently working with Fiona Crangle in Port Hope. Many of her paintings were inspired by her travels in Asia, India, and Turkey. Wilson’s paintings are on show at Furby’s in Port Hope.

AWOL Gallery is seeking submissions for Toronto’s most anticipated summer group show! The 7th Annual Original SQUARE FOOT Show. RSVP DEADLINE: Wednesday, July 15

AWOL Gallery (Toronto, Canada) is planning The Square Foot Show 2009, an annual group exhibition of hundreds of local, national and international artists working in all media. The Square Foot Show is an excellent networking event and an opportunity for participating Artists to gain exposure to collectors, curators, media, other artists, and the general public. This is Square Foot’s seventh year and the AWOL Collective is aiming to make the show bigger and better than ever. Like 2007’s & 2008’s exhibition, we will hold The Square Foot Show at an off site venue; The Lower Ossington Theatre (LOT) at 100A Ossington. This larger venue accommodates both the numerous artworks and the hundreds of people who come to view this exhibit every year. In 2008 over 600 artists participated and exhibited over 1300 pieces!

Drabinsky's Sentencing Proposal: I'll Go On Tour Livent founder and former Broadway producer Garth Drabinsky, convicted of fraud and forgery, "would teach theater students 'discipline in the craft,' talk about honesty and 'avoidance of unethical conduct' in visits to 65 schools across the country, as part of a sentence in which he would avoid jail, his lawyer Edward Greenspan told a judge at a sentencing hearing in Toronto today."

What’s On – This Weekend And The Coming Week


 

Opening Reception –Louise Aronson, Friday, 6:00 – 8:00 pm100 Mile Diner Warkworth. Award winning artist, Louise Aronson, will be exhibiting her paintings at the 100 Mile Diner, Main Street, Warkworth from Thursday, July 9 until the end of August. Louise works in both watercolour and oils. Her love of flowers, wild and cultivated, and her strength in design are evident in her works. The beautiful landscapes of this area inspire Louise to further her love for nature.  She will often be seen on the side of country roads painting alfresco.

On a sunny Saturday, attendees will have a unique opportunity to stroll through ten beautiful gardens, mostly in the Town of Port Hope. Horizons of Friendship 12th Annual Homes, Gardens & Music Tour - Sunday, 1:00-5:30 p.m. A Horizons of Friendship fundraising event offering an eclectic mix of homes and gardens situated in Cobourg and the surrounding countryside. The New Northumberland Calling Normandy, July 3rd -18th, at The Brighton Barn Theatre In tribute to the 65th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Europe, return with us for our re-creation of a Northumberland radio troop broadcast. Experience once again, through popular songs, radio sketches and news items of the era, our special thanks for the Canadian triumphal breakthrough at Juno Beach in 1944.

 

Port Hope Festival Theatre "Rock n' Roll Drive-In" 8:00 PM on June 18 – July 11, at the Capitol. Rock n' Roll Drive-In:  Ahhh!!! Summertime. Does life get any better??? Well…if you can remember borrowing dad's convertible and snuggling up to that special someone at the ever popular Drive-In Theatre…it just did!!!  Remember the sounds of Chuck Berry, Connie Francis and the Everly Brothers. How about the dance crazes led by Chubby Checker and the "Twist". It's all happening at the Rock n' Roll Drive-In. So join us for a trip down memory lane with some of the best music of the 50s and 60s and flashbacks to the movies that made your summers memorable.

 

Opening Reception – Evelyn Van Hoekelen, Tuesday, 6:00 – 8:00 pm, Campbellford Public Library. A number of the paintings featured were inspired by her visit to Bon Echo Park.  Others find her focus more on colour and design. Evelyn has been working in oils for the last ten years, taking courses, private lessons, and working in her home studio. Her studio and home are full of paintings and drawings. Until the end of September.

 

Writers’ Open House – Tuesday, 7:00 pm Percy Heritage Centre (Memorial Hall), 35 Church St in Warkworth. A discussion focused on the specific needs of writers and how Spirit of the Hills can serve those needs. Frances Gage: Unlikely Paradise -- sculptural work and photographs from her life. August 1st - 29th , Art Gallery of Northumberland, Cobourg. Reception and book launch at 85th birthday celebration, Saturday, August 22, 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Frances Gage has lived in Cobourg for 10 years and in that time has become an integral part of the community. Prior to our arrival in our midst, Gage gained wide recognition as one of Canada's leading sculptors. The recently finished biography by Alan Butcher is being published this summer. This exhibition is an honor of this event. The launch of her biography “Unlikely Paradise” coincides with her 85th birthday.

Why does his fiancee not trust him all of a sudden? And! What is that woman doing in his piano? The "G" String Broke is a zany romp (in the classic tradition of farce) through the life, lusts and loves of a very confused playwright.

 

Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors, Friday, August 7th, 7:00pm, Victoria Park, Cobourg. The Driftwood Theatre Group, Ontario's most accessible theatre company, celebrates its 15th Anniversary Season. A master and servant arrive in a strange city in search of twin siblings they've never met. Anita Gutteridge at Kingsley’s Korner, Brighton for the month of July. Anita validates with passion that painting in oils is what she loves to do best. Tending to her garden inspires her and the exhibit at the Apple Crate location displays the exquisite results. Kingsley’s Korner will be exhibiting visual art and 3D art by local artists at 46 Prince Edward St from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday.

 

At A.K. Collings Gallery, Port Hope "Melanie MacDonald –MacDonald was included in the "Emerging Artist" category for the Magenta Foundation's book, Carte Blanche 2, which honours Canada's best and most promising artists. The book was launched at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (MOCCA) in November, 2008. She is a young artist whose work is well worth seeing (and collecting).

The Cobourg Art Club has a display of paintings upstairs at The Mill Restaurant, Cobourg --an eclectic mix of original work in all media.

 

Zed Woman and the City” The Colborne Art Gallery, an exhibition of work by Annie McDonald & gallery artists. The show will be on through August 2nd. Ms. McDonald states the show is "an exploration of one mythic figure's transformative powers", and resembles walking into a graphic novel. Several mediums are employed to make the work, from stone and ceramics to fabrics and wire. The city is the rhetorical device used to depict the relationships of humanity with environment.”

Port Hope Estival! is calling for artists to participate during the August 1st & 2nd 2009 weekend. We would welcome artists in all media & we are encouraging any artist to demonstrate their work during the festival. Estival is a 2 day event designed to promote the art, food, music & culture of Northumberland county & the surrounding area. Please check out the website www.porthopeestival.ca

 

The Other Canvas -  September 19, Westben, Campbellford. a unique  event showcasing national and local talent as well as fundraising, presented in the picturesque Trent Hills of Northumberland County.The day will begin with a welcome and orientation, followed by a 'Meet & Greet' with the artists before a live art auction. A sensuous gala dinner prepared by Executive Chef Robert Buchanan of Acqua Ristorante e Bar (Toronto) and Executive Chef Peter Gosling of Oak Heights Estate Winery (Warkworth) will be served in the evening.

Some of the participating artists are: Robert Bateman, Holly Carr, Charles Pachter, Brent Butt, Jean Stilwell, and Clermont Duval. The Other Canvas will take place at Westben Barn Theatre, a magnificent 400-seat timber-frame barn which opens onto a lush meadow amidst the gently rolling hills of Northumberland County. The day starts at 2:00 p.m., and there are three pricing packages available to ensure a truly personalized experience.

The Other Canvas auction tickets are in great demand and there is a limited number available. A person may attend the auction portion for only $75.00 rather than buy a ticket for the gala dinner for 250.00. The national artist’s canvases have been arriving over the past few weeks and they are impressive. We are endeavouring to have a representative contingent of national artists actually attending the event; of course their official agents and managers are always a challenge to fit open dates.
