The Arts Council Of Northumberland is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life within our community by developing widespread appreciation of, support for and involvement in the arts and culture.

 

This newsletter covers theatre, music, lectures, films, workshops and exhibitions.

Flanked by elated cultural leaders whose organizations have been battered by the declining economy, she announced a one-time boost of $18.6-million for 2009-2010 and an annual operating increase of $24.8-million to be split among six institutions."

Over the River and Through the Woods, Friday, April 17th – May 2nd at the Brighton Barn Theatre. The play is by Joe diPietro, the author of the hilarious "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change". This play is a comedy about family relationships, specifically, intergenerational ones.

 

The POW Festival, Friday, Saturday, Sunday -  a weekend of poetry in Cobourg  The Festival will have 13 presentations over a four-day period including – eight poetry readings, a poetry recitation by a professional actor, a panel discussion, a special lecture by one of the poets and two ‘open Mic’ sessions. The Writer Next Door, Saturday, 2:00 pm at the Port Hope Public Library. Do you write? Do you aspire to be published? Do you dream of Oprah recommending your book to her audience? Do you want to hear an award-winning author? Then this is the event for you. The Writer Next Door is a panel discussion with three local self-published authors, Paul Arthurs, Pat Bryan, and Donna Wootton, and a very special guest - Terry Fallis, whose first novel The Best Laid Plans won the prestigious 2008 Stephen Leacock Award for Humour while it was still self-published! Refreshments, book sales and author signings will follow the discussion.

 

Harmonica Knights, Saturday, 18th, 8:00 pm, at the Park, Cobourg Tickets: $31.50 Hosted by Mark bird Stafford with special guests: Jerome Godboo, Chuck Jackson and David Rotundo. Harmonica Knights has been featured across the country on festival stages and clubs and no doubt will be the event of the year for blues and harmonica fans. It is a rare performance lineup with four of Canada's leading blues singers and harmonica players on one stage at Park Playhouse & Performing Arts Centre.

 

Rik Emmett, Saturday, 8:00 pm, $39.00 at the Capitol. Rik Emmett has his fair share of gold and platinum hanging on the wall after surviving three decades in the music biz. Awards from Best Guitarist at the '81 Junos to Best Smooth Jazz Guitarist in 2005, along with induction into the Canadian Rock Hall of Fame in '93, the Music Industry Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Junos Hall of Fame in 2008 are highlights in an ever-evolving career.

 

First Stages Play Readings – Three Tall Women, by Edward Albee - Sunday, 3:00 pm. Starring: Corinne Conley, Jillian Cook and Godric Latimer-Kim. Directed by Maria Heidler. This engaging examination of the life of one woman won the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Her long life is laid out for display, no holds barred. She cascades from regal and charming to vicious and wretched as she wonders about and remembers her life. How did she become this? Who is she? Her life, memories and reminiscences are unceremoniously examined, questioned, accepted or not, but at last, understood. "An extraordinarily brilliant play... the best, most forceful work Albee has given us." ~ The New York Post. Northumberland Film Sundays – Milk – Sunday, 4:00 pm at the Mall. Milk refers to Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to public office in the U.S. Milk is a powerful drama stirringly told. Milk may have been martyred at the prime of his political life, but screenwriter Dustin Lance Black does not attempt to sanctify him. Penn's Oscar-caliber transformation is breathtaking, and the saga of one man's fight for human rights is engrossing.

A multiple Tony award-winning satirical comedy which played from 2001-2004 on Broadway, Urinetown "pokes fun at capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, and petty small town politics (Wikipedia)". Judy Steed - "Aging in today's Society”, Tuesday, 8:00 P.M. at the Northumberland Hills Hospital. This is a two part series being put on by the Hospital Foundation. Hot on the heels of her triumphant Met debut as Rosina in last season’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Elīna Garanča portrays another Rossini charmer in this bel canto Cinderella story. What’s Coming? - At The Theatre And Dance


Camelot - For one brief shining moment, Victoria Concert Hall, Cobourg  will become the fabled court of Camelot with King Arthur, Sir Lancelot, Guenevere, Merlin, Mordred and even the witch Morgan LeFay. Presented by the VOS, Camelot is a Lerner and Loewe musical based on the King Arthur legend as adapted from the T. H. White novel The Once and Future King. The original 1960 Broadway production ran for 873 performances and won four Tony Awards."Don't let it be forgot that once there was a spot, for one brief shining moment that was known as Camelot".

Despite their seeming incompatibility, this odd couple are drawn together, both by their mutual fear of commitment and by a longing for love. LJYO's 10th Concert Season - Sonic Bloom - May 3rd, 3:00 pm Port Hope United Church. Don't miss the tenth season finale with specially commissioned new works. Cowboy Junkies, May 5th, 8:00 pm at the Park, Cobourg, Opening Act: Trish Robb http://www.myspace.com/trishrobb Tickets: $42.00. Few bands have lasted as long as the Cowboy Junkies, with their original line-up still intact, and fewer still have created as consistently satisfying a body of work. Albums like The Trinity Session (1988), Black Eyed Man (1992), Miles From Our Home (1998) and Early 21st Century Blues (2005), to isolate just a few high points, chronicle a creative journey that is impervious to trends.

 

The La Jeunesse family of choirs present their Spring Concert, “See the Rhythm, Hear the Dance” on Sunday, May 10th 3.00 PM at Trinity United Church, Port Hope period Featuring music from different genres, time periods, and cultures,  a common thread links all of the songs together into a beautiful package: the connection of the music to dance. While the singers won’t necessarily be kicking up their heels, the listener will be whisked away on a musical journey where their hands will clap and their toes will inevitably tap. The angelic and powerful voices of the choirs take on a physical life  as they send the beats and rhythms deep into your souls.

 

The Arrogant Worms - Saturday, May 16th, 8:00 pm at the Capitol, Port Hope. The Arrogant Worms have sold more than 150,000 copies of their 12 albums and played on three continents to crowds as large as 100,000. They were recognized in 2003 as the Touring Act of the Year by the Canadian Arts Presenters Association. The Worms have entertained at corporate functions, sung anthems at sporting events and emceed at major festivals. Their songs are in school lesson plans, in textbooks and even played on the Space Shuttle. On earth or in space, everyone digs these Worms.

 

MurrayMcLauchlan, Thursday May 14th, 8:00$31.50 at the Park, Cobourg. Murray McLauchlan is a multiple Juno award winner and a member of the order of Canada. He began performing in coffee houses around Toronto’s Yorkville area in the 1960’s. Mclauchlan has released 18 albums, has had songs covered by the likes of Tom Rush, Kris Kristofferson, and Waylon Jennings, he has hosted a weekly radio program on CBC, is an avid lover of aviation and is considered to be one of the most important figures in Canadian folk music.

 

Northumberland Orchestra and Choir "30th Anniversary Gala Concert" Saturday, May 23, 8:00 p.m. at the Park, Cobourg, This evening's entertainment will be featuring Peter Appleyard and his Group.

 

Joel Plaskett & Friends, May 25th, $35+ GST 8:00 PM at the Park, Cobourg. Joel Plaskett will be presenting a more stripped down acoustic show accompanied by his father Bill, Rose Cousins and Ana Egge. Since 2006, Plaskett has toured extensively both solo and with The Emergency, to sold-out clubs and theatres throughout Canada, the U.S., the U.K. and Australia.

Watercolour workshop – The Brighton Arts Council is pleased to announce renowned painter Frans Aeyelts from Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, will present a three day watercolour workshop, focusing on landscape painting at Timberhouse Country Inn Resort, in Brighton. The workshop will incorporate the basic principles of perspective enabling participants to get good results, now and in future paintings.  Frans will provide handouts with clear instructions on how to proceed through the drawing and painting stage. Students will have the satisfaction of taking home a completed painting at the end of each day. The workshop is aimed at both beginner and more advanced students, and is limited to 15 students. Wayne Mondok art show Friday May 8th , and Saturday May 9th , Cobourg Public Library. This is a fundraising event to benefit the Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation (NHH Foundation).The paintings at the show will consist mostly of smaller, affordable work ($400.00 range), although a few larger pieces will be there as well. These paintings will span a variety of subjects, including landscapes (Canadian west coast, Canadian east coast, Northumberland area), still life, wildlife and figurative work. All the originals sold at the show will include framing. Twenty-five percent of all sales (and commissions accepted at the show) will be donated to the Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation.All of the art at the show will be original paintings with the exception of "Toronto St." and "Reflections of the Past". These posters will be for sale at the show for $20.00 each (unframed). 100% of the sale from the posters ($20.00) will be donated to the NHH Foundation. In this moment, a show by gallery member Barbara Buntin, features monotype prints and washi paper collage, work that engages the viewer in a visual dialogue. New works by the other gallery artists are shown in the 2nd and 3rd galleries. Opening Reception Saturday May 2, 2:00 – 4:00 pm at the Colborne Art Gallery.

 

Living Green Fair - Saturday, May 9, 10:00-4:00 at the Fall Fair Centre on McCaul St., Port Hope. Sponsored by the Port Hope Heritage Ecology Garden Event, the fair features local green initiatives, ideas, entertainment, kids' activities, food and various artisans and purveyors of green products. I will be there with things from my shop and demonstrating either chair caning or basket weaving.
