ACN Member Of The Week

Eric Winter – Cobourg’s Poet Laureate. “He claims the best poetry comes from the soul and the best of the rest is due to wit. Poetry draws attention to itself, he says. You can't see through it to the kind of conclusion you would reading a woodworking manual. Indeed, riffing off Marshall McLuhan, he says emphatically, the medium is the message. Writing poetry is writing your own script as an actor.” Hear him read at the Poetry’zOwn Weekend (POW!) Festival 2009’.

Culture tourism draws whole new crowd to Northumberland

Northumberland County is a haven for culture and heritage. Whether it’s Port Hope’s Capitol Theatre and historical downtown core, Cobourg’s venerable Victoria Hall or the rejuvenation of Main Street, Warkworth and its business community, municipalities across the county have attached their cart to cultural tourism.

Hardly a day goes by that our newsroom isn’t notified about an art gallery opening, a theatre production, a concert or a festival, which attracts not only locals, but some of the eight million people who live within the Greater Golden Horseshoe area, a 32,000 square kilometre stretch of land around Lake Ontario, from Niagara in the west to Peterborough in the east.

Cashing in on culture

“Tourism is definitely big business in Northumberland County,” said Mr. Borowec. “According to Statistics Canada’s Regional Tourism Profiles, 2007, the average day-tripper to Northumberland spends $84 per visit, while an overnight visitor drops $146 a night.” The latest addition to Northumberland County’s culture tourism stage is the inaugural ‘Poetry’zOwn Weekend (POW!) Festival 2009’. From April 16 to 19, poetry aficionados from near and far will gather in Cobourg for the festival, hosted by the Cobourg Poetry Workshop (CPW), with partial funding by the Canada Council for the Arts through the League of Canadian Poets.
