The Arts Council Of Northumberland is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life within our community by developing widespread appreciation of, support for and involvement in the arts and culture.

 

This newsletter covers theatre, music, lectures, films, workshops and exhibitions.

ACN Member Artist Of The Week

Pat Stanley and Valerie Russell will be at the Toronto Art Expo again this year. The Expo runs from March 19-22, in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, on Front Street just west of Union Station. Over 350 artists will be participating in this spectacular event. The Opening Gala is Thursday from 5pm - 10pm, with Nagata Shachu Japanese Taiko Drumming, Whirling Dervishes from Turkey, and a Cuban Jazz Extravaganza with Jane Bunnett and the Spirit of Havana. Calling all arts groups

INNRESPONSE is an Ontario not-for-profit corporation (#647441) with charitable status through Charities Canada (#888661261RR0001) facilitating instructional and experiential programs focusing on the under-represented groups of visual and performing artists in rural communities. We are particularly motivated to encourage youth so that they will be the continuing generation of inspired and motivated community participants. In the spirit of giving back to a community through creative endeavour, we support activities that integrate professionals with amateurs, families, all age groups and skill levels. INNRESPONSE is a cultural organization of volunteers with a wide experience in the Arts, Education, Business and Capacity Building who wish to share this through partnerships with innovative groups and individuals.

Help "Facing dwindling ticket sales from U.S. theatre goers and its first deficit since the early 1990s, the Stratford Shakespeare Festival is appealing to government for financial support to help it through the recession. The Stratford, Ont., festival revealed in a press release sent out on Saturday that it had suffered a $2.6-million deficit in 2008 despite a program featuring Christopher Plummer in a critically acclaimed production of George Bernard Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra."

The Irish Descendants – Friday, 8:00 pm at the Capitol. The band's award winning recordings range from lilting ballads to toe-tapping reels, and their high-energy, humorous live performances have made them a popular attraction at home and abroad. To date, the band has sold half a million albums.

 

A.K. Collings Gallery, Port Hope, presents "Untended Spaces": an exhibition of photographs by Ted Amsden.  The artist will be present for the reception from 2:00 to 4:00 on Saturday. Amsden's images of abandoned industrial spaces have been described as "beautiful", "poignant" and "redemptive". Certainly, the timeliness of this body of work is undeniable. MORE

 

An Illustrative Life - Jirina Marton,  opening reception Saturday, 2:00 to 4:00 pm. at the Colborne Art Gallery New works by the other gallery artists will be featured in the 2nd and 3rd galleries. Marton was born in Prague, where she studied art before having to escape communist Czechoslovakia, ending up in Paris France.  It was there that a friend inspired her to start making illustrations for children's books.  Marton has illustrated picture books internationally, and her paintings are exhibited in Italy, Japan, France, Spain and Canada from March 14 until April 26.

Amateur or professional artists and photographers from Northumberland County will once again display their work during Spirit of the Hill's ninth annual Juried Art and Photography Show on Saturday, March 14th and Sunday, March 15th. The show and sale will be held within the Percy Heritage Centre, 35 Church Street, Warkworth. This year's adjudication will be conducted by Ricardo Gomez. A working sculptor who taught for thirty years at the Alberta College of Art, Calgary as well as Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario. Special Event - Stars of Tomorrow - Saturday, 3:00 p.m. - St. Peter's Church, Port Hope - Iain Scott, one of Canada’s leading experts on opera, is a lecturer, opera tour guide, and a familiar voice on CBC opera broadcasts.

In spring 2009 Iain will make his fifth appearance as concert host, bringing with him his unique and entertaining perspective on opera. Films at the Capitol, Thursday 8:00 pm – Welcome To The Sticks. Although living a comfortable life in Salon-de-Provence, a charming town in the South of France, Julie has been feeling depressed for a while. To please her, Philippe Abrams, a post office administrator, her husband, tries to obtain a transfer to a seaside town, on the French Riviera, at any cost. The trouble is that he is caught red-handed while trying to scam an inspector. Philippe is immediately banished to the distant unheard of town of Bergues, in the Far North of France. Leaving his child and wife behind, the crucified man leaves for his frightening destination, a dreadfully cold place inhabited by hard-drinking, unemployed rednecks, speaking an incomprehensible dialect called Ch'ti. Philippe soon realizes that all these ideas were nothing but prejudices and that Bergues is not synonymous with hell.

Susan Statham talks about her work her portraiture interest and technique at the library on Tuesday, March 24th, 6:00 pm at the Campbellford Public Library. Statham is both an avid student and teacher.  She is a graduate of the Ottawa School of Art, Algonquin College, The National Portrait Academy and the University of Waterloo.

Food, Farms and the Future...Where Do We Grow From Here? Victoria Hall Volunteers, Wednesday, April 8, Victoria Hall, Cobourg, 7:30 pm.  Thomas F. Pawlick, an award winning investigative science journalist, journalism professor, and organic farmer will discuss his book The End of Food. Fifth generation local dairy and beef farmer, and Past President of the Northumberland Federation of Agriculture, Gaye Hoskin, will address issues surrounding the production, distribution and marketing of food in Northumberland County.The evening will include an information market of local food producers, door prizes and complimentary refreshments. The POW Festival is a weekend – April 16th – 19th - of poetry in Cobourg  The Festival will have 13 presentations over a four-day period including – eight poetry readings, a poetry recitation by a professional actor, a panel discussion, a special lecture by one of the poets and two ‘open Mic’ sessions. First Stages Presents DUET FOR ONE, by Tom Kempinski

Directed by Robert Latimer. Winner of the 1980 London Theatre Critics Award for Best Play, this is an immensely moving story about a concert violinist who is stricken with multiple sclerosis that necessitates her retirement from the stage and then threatens her marriage as well. The play revolves around sessions between the violinist and her psychiatrist in which she tries to cope with her illness and its affect on her life. The story is loosely based on the life of world-renowned cello virtuoso Jacqueline du Pre and her husband, pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim. The Northumberland Players - The Last Resort by Norm Foster at the Concert Hall at Victoria Hall, Cobourg. An off-the-wall spoof about a New York restaurateur on the run from the mob. He finds himself at a run down hotel in Saskatchewan where everyone who checks in could be the Hit-man who is out to get him. March 27, 28, 29, April 2, 3, 4 at 8:00 p.m. $25.00, 905 372-2210.

 

Over the River and Through the Woods April 17th – May 2nd at the Brighton Barn Theatre. The play is by Joe diPietro, the author of the hilarious "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change". This play is a comedy about family relationships, specifically, intergenerational ones.

 

Camelot - For one brief shining moment, Victoria Concert Hall, Cobourg  will become the fabled court of Camelot with King Arthur, Sir Lancelot, Guenevere, Merlin, Mordred and even the witch Morgan LeFay. Presented by the VOS, Camelot is a Lerner and Loewe musical based on the King Arthur legend as adapted from the T. H. White novel The Once and Future King. The original 1960 Broadway production ran for 873 performances and won four Tony Awards."Don't let it be forgot that once there was a spot, for one brief shining moment that was known as Camelot".

St. Lawrence String Quartet  Sunday, March 29, 3:00 p.m. - Cameco Capitol Arts Centre  The quartet has won two Grammy Awards for works played with imagination, sensitivity, and the sensational physical abandon that audiences cheer. Oriana Singers - Bach to Bernstein  - March 28, 2009 at 7:30 pm. St. Peter's Church, Cobourg. Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms is a challenging choral work, commissioned for the 1965 Southern Cathedrals' Festival at Chichester Cathedral. It has been described as one of Bernstein's most exhilarating scores. In addition to several other works from Bernstein including excerpts from West Side Story, the Oriana Singers will also perform favourites from J.S. Bach. Musical numbers will be set around an interesting discussion Messieurs Bernstein and Bach will be having with each other between numbers. New! Open Life Drawing Studio Tuesday nights  March 24 to April 28, 6:30 to 9:30 pm the Art Gallery of Northumberland hosts drop-in life drawing sessions for artists at the Upstairs Gallery, 34 Walton Street, Port Hope. A variety of poses from 2 minute gestures to a final one hour pose. No instruction. $15.00.

Tuesday morning Life Drawing classes at the Upstairs Gallery. Learn the principles of good drawing through time-honoured methods of working with the model. Concepts of gesture, contour, tone, and composition will be introduced and work by masters of the genre will be discussed. Fun, accessible, challenging, and process oriented, this workshop is suitable for both beginners and more experienced artists who want to hone their figure drawing skills.
