The Arts Council Of Northumberland is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life within our community by developing widespread appreciation of, support for and involvement in the arts and culture.

 

This newsletter covers theatre, music, lectures, films, workshops and exhibitions.

Member Artist Of The Week

George Pichl - In the eighties and nineties Pichlwas represented by Del Bello Gallery of Toronto. Since 2000 he has been showing mainly at Art Gallery of Northumberland and Colborne Art Gallery.His most recent works feature a blend of several of his long term disciplines resulting in digital collages of sculpture and photography. What ever is next for George Pichl, you can be sure he will keep moving forward - exploring, questioning and creating. MORE

Meet & Greet at Oak Heights Winery
You are invited! On Sunday, March 1st, 2:00 – 4:00 pm we will have our 2nd Meet & Greet. At our first event last October, attendance was 23 members of our far-flung arts community and there was a lot of networking done. Oak Heights provided the wine, cheese and hors d'oeuvres and a pleasant evening was had by all.

Two April Workshops Chair Dorette Carter is working on arranging with the OAC for the following visual arts workshops:

- how to prepare your portfolio for gallery presentation

- how to prepare a proposal for an exhibition assistance grant from the Ontario Arts Council.

Northumberland Conference of the Arts - May 8th -9th, in Cobourg, organized by Community Futures Development Corp. in co-operation with the ACN, Spirit of the Hills and Brighton Arts Council. The target audience are artists and all those interested in art in Northumberland and the surrounding area; their friends and family; and any one else who happens to hear about the Conference. The programme of speakers will focus on individual artists and artists' groups wanting to promote their work and needing help and advice on organizing and funding. There will be a reception on the Friday evening aimed at enabling artists to meet and mingle with local dignitaries- the Minister of Culture will be attending we understand- and the Saturday will be devoted to the Conference itself. “Vision and Transformation” - Frances Clancy in February at Ganaraska Art & Framing, Port Hope After Attending Ontario College of Art (now OCAD) with advance placement, where she studied under the noted illustrators Will Davies, James Hill, Ken Dallison, Gerry Sevier and Don Sinclair, Frances began her professional career. Working from Toronto, she gained over twenty years experience in a broad variety of illustration styles with many commissions from noted clients such as Royal Trust, Compaq, Scott Papers Ltd. And Annick Press.

 

Friday Mysteries and More – 2:00 pm Cobourg Public Library –. The Naked City. Director Jules Dassin  - The film that inspired the famous TV series. Using an actual NYPD case, this film stars New York City and its unscripted residents. It culminates with a stomach-churning chase scene through city streets ending high atop a Williamsburg Bridge tower.

Lucia di Lammermoor – Donizetti -Saturday, February 7, 1:00 pm, The Capitol (Sung in Italian) Anna Netrebko sings the title role of Donizetti’s fragile heroine for the first time at the Met, with tenor Rolando Villazón in the part of her lover, Edgardo. Andrew Gregg Lectures at the Art Gallery of Northumberland, continuing into February, 7:00 pm. The topics: comparative landscape painting (Canadian and Australian style), Matisse and his influence, and modernity and cathedral art. Tickets are $10 per lecture or $35 for all four.

Many are perplexed by the prevailing sense of alienation between science and religion. Instructor: Dr. Thaddeus J. Trenn holds PhD in History of Science and Masters in Physics and Philosophy.

Films at the Capitol –Tuesday, 8:00 pm – Changeling - Golden Globe Award Nominee - Best Actress - Angelina Jolie, Inspired by actual events that occurred in 1920s-era Los Angeles, Clint Eastwood's "Changeling" tells the story of a woman driven to confront a corrupted LAPD after her abducted son is retrieved and she begins to suspect that the boy returned to her is not the same boy she gave birth to.

 

Tuesday Classic Movie Matinees – 2:00 pm at the Port Hope Public Library, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947). Danny Kaye stars as the comic book writer whose dreams of being a hero suddenly come to life when he a mysterious woman hands him a little black book.   He finds himself in the middle of a confusing conspiracy and discovers that being a real-life hero isn't as easy as he imagined.

Black History Month Special Presentation - Larry and Evelyn Hall - Saturday, February 21st, 2:00 pm, Mary J. Benson Branch, Port Hope. Port Hope resident Larry Hall is a retired broadcaster and journalist, and his  wife Evelyn is his research assistant. Their research into Larry's family history revealed that Larry's great-grandfathers were fugitive slaves who fled the United States for Canada along the Underground Railroad.  Larry and Evelyn return to the Library with another thought-provoking presentation.

What’s On–Classes And Workshops


DISCOVER ACRYLICS March 14th,5 HR. Workshop MAX. 14 participants, The Painted Tree, Cobourg An exploratory, introductory workshop offering a broad overview of acrylic paints, mediums, gels and pastes, grounds and painting techniques. Explore thick impasto vs. fluid paints, Organic and Inorganic pigments, textural layering and glazing. Create unusual surface treatments and underpaintings to use with other mediums (i.e. watercolour, pastel). Also includes special effects with luminous and reflective paints. Participants will create approx. 8 small paintings, each using different combinations of techniques and products. All paints, gels, pastes and grounds are provided by Golden. 905.372.1313.  A 30.00 deposit is required to hold the spot. The fee is 60.00+GST for the day long workshop. 10:00 - 4:30 pm.

Northumberland Hook and Needles Guild. This friendly, creative group of knitters meets the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each Month! The East Durham Historical Society Annual Heritage Fair Sunday, February 22nd, Lions Center in Port Hope – 29 Thomas Street. The theme this year is CELEBRATION 45 – 175 YEARS. The 45th Anniversary of the East Durham Historical Society and The 175th Anniversary of the Incorporation of the Town of Port Hope, We are looking for descendants of the Early families to the area besides the Smith’s and Walton’s who made significant contributions to our community. We are looking for input from the Community in the form of Genealogy charts, pictures of your ancestors, clothing, early methods of cooking, working, businesses, countries of origin. What’s On – At The Competitions


Northumberland Conference on the Arts Logo Competition - The first annual Northumberland Arts Conference invites submissions for a logo design that best represents the cultural sector for Northumberland County and The Conference on the Arts.  The logo will appear on all correspondence, letter head and advertising.  A $150.00 prize will be awarded to the successful entry. Entry forms must reach the Northumberland CFDC office no later than 5:00 p.m. Friday February 6th, via mail or e-mail.
