The Arts Council Of Northumberland is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life within our community by developing widespread appreciation of, support for and involvement in the arts and culture.

 

This newsletter covers theatre, music, lectures, films, workshops and exhibitions.

Meet & Greet at Oak Heights Winery
You are invited! On Sunday, March 1st, 2:00 – 4:00 pm we will have our 2nd Meet & Greet. At our first event last October, attendance was 23 members of our far-flung arts community and there was a lot of networking done. Oak Heights provided the wine, cheese and hors d'oeuvres and a pleasant evening was had by all.

Dorette Carter new ACN Chair.

At its January board meeting, the ACN elected Dorette Carter as its chair and Astrid Hudson as the vice chair.

We also welcomed Veronica Derry and Oliver Steins as new Board members and reluctantly said goodbye to Christine Benson and John Draper

 

Two April Workshops Chair Dorette Carter is working on arranging with the OAC for the following visual arts workshops:

- how to prepare your portfolio for gallery presentation

- how to prepare a proposal for an exhibition assistance grant from the Ontario Arts Council.

Northumberland Conference of the Arts - May 8th -9th, in Cobourg, organized by Community Futures Development Corps in co-operation with the ACN. The target audience is artists and all those interested in art in Northumberland and the surrounding area; their friends and family; and any one else who happens to hear about the Conference. The programme of speakers will focus on individual artists and artists' groups wanting to promote their work and needing help and advise on organizing and funding. There will be a reception on the Friday evening aimed at enabling artists to meet and mingle with local dignitaries- the Minister of Culture will be attending we understand- and the Saturday will be devoted to the Conference itself. Details tba.

Re-released after painstaking film research to restore many, missing scenes, Director Frank Capra’s 1937 mighty movie about a secret utopia in the mountains of Tibet based on  James Hilton’s romantic novel. Hockey Event At Port Hope Library, Saturday, 9:00 – 12:00 pm. The day starts when local farmer and Library supporter John Boughen delivers bales of straw, which we use to ring the Library’s Queen Street parking lot. Then our ‘rink’ is ready for kids up to 12 years old to grab their sticks, strap on their helmets and join members of the Port Hope Predators for a classic Canadian game of road hockey. Meanwhile, kids and their families can warm up in the Library with classic Canadian snacks – hot chocolate and Timbits, kindly donated by our local Tim Hortons. Predators players will also be in the Library to read and do other activities with the kids. Not into hockey? No problem - come for the indoor activities.

San Murata at The Colborne Gallery, January 24  March 8,  Opening Reception Saturday at 2:00 pm, San lives in our area now; his inimitable colour sense and style convey a truly magical spirit of place. His gouache paintings are lively, colourful, and whimsical yet display a mastery of what can be a very challenging medium. His paintings often have the feel of visual melodies which is not surprising because in addition to being a painter, San is also an accomplished musician, playing the jazz violin. He has played with many of Canada’s foremost jazz and pop performers and has been nominated by the National Jazz Awards as Violinist of the Year four times.

Andrew Gregg Lectures at the Art Gallery of Northumberland

January 26th continuing into February, 7:00 pm. The topics : comparative landscape painting (Canadian and Australian style), Bernini and the Baroque, Matisse and his influence, and modernity and cathedral art. Tickets are $10 per lecture or $35 for all four.

Tommy Hunter - Canada's Country Gentleman Wednesday, 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm at the Park Playhouse. Share the Music, Share the Memories. Although he's been identified with country music over the past half century, Tommy Hunter, like a great part of his loyal audiences, can’t be pinned down to simply one genre of music. Gentleman, yes, but the gentlemanly style and manner is not reserved just for the country music fan.

 

Films at the Capitol –Thursday, 8:00 pm. The Duchess - A chronicle of the life of 18th century aristocrat Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, who reviled for her extravagant political and personal lives. She is a vibrant beauty and celebrity of her time. But she is trapped in an unhappy triangle with her husband and his live-in mistress. She falls passionately in love with an ambitious young politician, and the affair causes a bitter conflict with her husband and threatens to erupt into a scandal.

What’s Coming at The Stratford Festival Broadcasts at the Capitol


Caesar & Cleopatra – A comedy by George Bernard Shaw Saturday, January 31st, 1:00 pm - Christopher Plummer returns to the Stratford stage to take on the role of Julius Caesar in Shaw's delightfully witty and seductive comedy. The Stratford Shakespeare Festival is the first theatre to try out the model of The Met: Live in HD with director Des McAnuff's acclaimed production of Bernard Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra, which stars stage veteran Christopher Plummer as Caesar. Unlike the Met, however, Stratford won't be transmitting live; they have recorded two performances and will show an edited version in cinemas across Canada in January and on television networks at a later date.

Black History Month Special Presentation - Larry and Evelyn Hall - Saturday, February 21st, 2:00 pm, Mary J. Benson Branch, Port Hope. Port Hope resident Larry Hall is a retired broadcaster and journalist, and his

 wife Evelyn is his research assistant. Their research into Larry's family history revealed that Larry's great-grandfathers were fugitive slaves who fled the United States for Canada along the Underground Railroad.  Larry and Evelyn return to the Library with another thought-provoking presentation.

What’s On–Classes And Workshops


 

DISCOVER ACRYLICS March 14th,5 HR. Workshop MAX. 14 participants, The Painted Tree, Cobourg An exploratory, introductory workshop offering a broad overview of acrylic paints, mediums, gels and pastes, grounds and painting techniques. Explore thick impasto vs. fluid paints, Organic and Inorganic pigments, textural layering and glazing. Create unusual surface treatments and underpaintings to use with other mediums (i.e. watercolour, pastel). Also includes special effects with luminous and reflective paints. Participants will create approx. 8 small paintings, each using different combinations of techniques and products. All paints, gels, pastes and grounds are provided by Golden. 905.372.1313.  A 30.00 deposit is required to hold the spot. The fee is 60.00+GST for the day long workshop. 10:00 - 4:30 pm.

Northumberland Hook and Needles Guild. This friendly, creative group of knitters meets the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each Month! First Thursday is “Knitter-Knatter”, including: Business Meeting, Treasurer’s Report, Library Exchange, Knitting News, Show and Tell. Bring your knitting to share, discuss and inspire! The 45th Anniversary of the East Durham Historical Society and The 175th Anniversary of the Incorporation of the Town of Port Hope, We are looking for descendants of the Early families to the area besides the Smith’s and Walton’s who made significant contributions to our community. We are looking for input from the Community in the form of Genealogy charts, pictures of your ancestors, clothing, early methods of cooking, working, businesses, countries of origin. What’s On – At The Competitions


Northumberland Conference on the Arts Logo Competition - The first annual Northumberland Arts Conference invites submissions for a logo design that best represents the cultural sector for Northumberland County and The Conference on the Arts.  The logo will appear on all correspondence, letter head and advertising.  A $150.00 prize will be awarded to the successful entry. Entry forms must reach the Northumberland CFDC office no later than 5:00 p.m. Friday February 6th, via mail or e-mail.
