The Forsyth review: Plaid Tidings - It’s a fun show with some great bits

This weekend is your last chance to see Plaid Tidings at the Capitol Theatre in Port Hope. Your last chance to see Sparky, Smudge, Franky and Jinx come down from heaven, where they’ve been since the 1960s, to play 50s and 60s music in a Christmas concert. In the sixties the four lads, musicians and huge Beatle fans, were on a bus on their way to see their heroes on the Ed Sullivan show. Sadly the bus crashed and the four lads went to heaven. They came back briefly a few years ago to do a show called Forever Plaid, the show they never got to do in real life. Plaid Tidings is the sequel and the Christmas concert that starts off the season at the Capitol.

It’s a fun show with some great bits – particularly the “Calypso Christmas” and “The Ed Sullivan Show”. And the accompaniment, provided by Susan Tanner on piano and Richard Homme on bass, is simply wonderful. Susan is the only person I have ever seen play the drums on the piano. You have to see her do it to know what I mean.

The next Christmas fun at Cameco Capitol Arts Centre will be the 7th annual Christmas Panto: Hansel & Gretel. It runs from December 6th to 21st  and will be a hoot. For tickets to Plaid Tidings and the panto call the box office at 905.885.1071.

Forever Plaid - Plaid Tidings

Friday, 8:00 pm, Capitol Theatre  - complete schedule HERE

Forever Plaid: Plaid Tidings is a brand-new show that offers the best of Forever Plaid tied-up in a nifty package with a big Christmas bow on top! Filled with Christmas standards that have all been “Plaid-erized,” our boys are back to do their Christmas Special. At first they aren’t sure why they’ve returned, but a phone call from the heavenly Rosemary Clooney lets them know that they’re needed to put a little harmony into a discordant world. Sprinkled among the Christmas offerings are audience favorites like their riotous three minute and eleven second version of “The Ed Sullivan Show” - this time featuring the Rockettes, the Chipmunks and The Vienna Boys Choir, and a Plaid Caribbean Christmas which puts the “Day-O” in Excelsis! This is one holiday treat that is truly “heaven-sent!”

The Only Christmas Pageant In Town – The Northumberland Players Youtheatre

Saturday, 2:00 pm the Victoria Concert Hall

Every year, the commanding Olive Green directs the Christmas pageant for the Little Church in the Vale, but there is always something missing. Trying to get it right this year, she hires the flashy Hollywood Theater of Peace and Tidings of Great Joy Traveling Troupe with their real feather angel wings, a band and a camel! But when a snowstorm keeps Hollywood out, Olive's friends convince her to create a pageant with the church members already there. Everyone wants in on the act, from the feuding church board members who suddenly discover harmony to the women's auxiliary singing tidings of comfort and pie. There are also the people at the church seeking shelter from the storm, but something is still missing, even with the arrival of three wisemen—Allen, Fred and George Wiseman, that is! Not even the children's choir joining forces with Ole Olsen's polka band can fill the emptiness Olive feels until a wise custodian tells her exactly what she is missing. The best-loved songs of Christmas and a sweet, funny story filled with memorable characters combine to teach a gentle lesson—Christmas is not in the flash and the feathers but in the true gift of that holy night so long ago.
