Alderville's Black Oak Savanna (BOS) is the largest remnant of the Rice Lake Plains, an area that today is fragmented and under continued human pressure and development, and that which is physically associated with the Oak Ridges Moraine. The BOS of Alderville is managed by a Natural Heritage Coordinator and part of her work involves an affiliation with Environment Canada and its Habitat Stewardship Program for Species at Risk. The site is quite rare and an attractive one for academics and students working in environmental sciences, biology and ecological restoration. Historically, because of the traditional practices of the Mississauga Ojibway at Alderville this site has remained quite pristine and a physical and living reflection of the "Anishinabeg". Alderville First Nation was founded during the mid-1830s as a relocation to the Mississauga Ojibway groups that inhabited the Bay of Quinte-St Lawrence River corridor in what is today eastern Ontario. Their history is rich as military allies of the British in the development and defense of Upper Canada and even before that in their conquest over "the Mohawks" some 300 years ago. Today the community is able to maintain its traditions in the area while equally participating in the mainstream economy and the broader labour market where a large number of people are busines owners, tradespersons and professionals. 11696 Second Line Phone: 905-352-3044 Website: www.aldervillefirstnation.ca |
