Artist's Statement

Kenneth ErskineAs a youngster, I started out as a piano player but was drawn to the drum set and other percussion instruments in secondary school. After high school, I attended the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music in their performance degree program. Upon graduation, I continued study at the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Orchestra Training Program.

After these five years of study, I accepted a position as a teacher with the Royal Consevatory and explored a freelance career in classical percussion in the greater Toronto area. In 1990, I made a career change from full time musician to full time educator and returned to the University of Toronto to obtain a degree in education.

Some local ensembles I regularly perform with include The Royals (Cobourg), The Ron Marenger Big Band (Peterborough), The Big Easy 7 (Cobourg), L’ll Big Band (Peterborough), The Bluenote Dixie Band (Cobourg), Blue Mood (Peterborough), Swing Street Big Band (Whitby), Tanya Wills & North Shore (Port Hope), and and the Biff Hannon Trio (Peterborough). "I have also performed with various musical theatre companies at Victoria Hall (Cobourg), the Capital Theatre (Port Hope), Showplace (Peterborough) and the Academy Theatre (Lindsay)."
