Individuals: Visual Artists: Albert Seaman

Artist's Statement

Whether recreational or professional, drawing and painting has always been an essential part of my life, from detailed technical illustrations, to the broad aspects of landscape paintings. Over the years, my style of art has changed to suit a variety of needs and circumstances. In early days, I did as bid by my tutors, whether it suited me or not. Later, I was able to focus on realism, as I believe the viewer should be able to enjoy a picture’s message without having to face the challenges of interpretation. Also, much of my landscape work has an historical or architectural flavour, where accuracy is important.

For landscapes, I normally work in watercolour or alkyd media. Technical illustrations may be pen and ink or computer generated, depending on the required method of reproduction or distribution.

The advent of digital photography and sophisticated computer programmes has greatly simplified the methods by which I produce corporate and technical literature, but my attachment to brush and pen will never diminish.

Bio

Albert Seaman is a native of Croydon, England. He was trained originally in airframe design engineering during World War II, subsequently migrating to other fields of engineering. He attended Croydon School of Art as an external student in the 1950s, where he studied contemporary techniques in painting. With his small family, he moved to Canada in 1958, and settled in what became the City of Brampton. In 2005, he moved to Port Hope, Ontario, where he now has his studio, and unlimited opportunities for new landscape paintings.

In keeping with a considerable interest in the history of society, Albert has served, and continues to serve the community in several capacities such as library boards, historical societies and various advisory committees of Municipal Councils. He has researched, written, edited, illustrated and produced books and essays on topics related to community history and architectural preservation, for which he has received a Civic Award.
