The individual and organizational members of the Arts Council of Northumberland provide training in the visual arts and other artistic disciplines. This training takes the form of workshops, classes, field trips, and lectures. Both children and adults can benefit from these learning opportunities.

Journey Through the Arts In-the-schools Program Our visual art workshops are suitable for children in Grades 1 through 8, and focus on introducing students to famous artists and their work. In addition to learning about various visual artists they will also work on one art project. All supplies are included, and these workshops make great additions to any school curriculum. Basic Drawing & Watercolor Course for Young People with Hilda Van Netten Hilda has taught students at various schools in Northumberland County how to draw and paint. Currently, she volunteers at Brookside Youth Centre in Cobourg, teaching students there as well. Age: Grade 5 – 12. What do you get? 10 2hr. lessons, learn to draw what you see, learn to use watercolors, all supplies for the course, fun and encouragement! Minimum class size = 5.

Tuesday morning Lifedrawing classes Learn the principles of good drawing through time-honoured methods of working with the model. Concepts of gesture, contour, tone, and composition will be introduced and work by masters of the genre will be discussed. Fun, accessible, challenging, and process oriented, this workshop is suitable for both beginners and more experienced artists who want to hone their figure drawing skills. Open Life Drawing Studio Tuesday nights from 6:30 to 9:30 the Art Gallery of Northumberland hosts drop-in life drawing sessions for artists. A variety of poses from 2 minute gestures to a final one hour pose. No instruction.

Discover Acrylics 5 Hour Workshop Max. 14 participants An exploratory, introductory workshop offering a broad overview of acrylic paints, mediums, gels and pastes, grounds and painting techniques. Explore thick impasto vs. fluid paints, Organic and Inorganic pigments, textural layering and glazing. Create unusual surface treatments and underpaintings to use with other mediums (i.e. watercolour, pastel). Also includes special effects with luminous and reflective paints. Participants will create approx. 8 small paintings, each using different combinations of techniques and products. Acrylics Like Oil: Still Life 5 Hour Workshop Max. 14 participants Will cover how to get Oil-like effects using Acrylic paints. Heavy body, Open and Fluid acrylics, clean color mixing and a basic palette in which gels and mediums can be added for an oil-like consistency. You will learn which pigments provide clean color mixing and a basic palette for traditional techniques and which mediums to add for blending and glazing. Specific exercises show participants how to underpaint, overpaint, blend and glaze. Students will create a still-life painting using the techniques covered throughout the workshop. A Crackle Paste board will be offered to paint on in to explore the “Historic” look with Historical colours. A Molding Paste board will be used to paint over with Open colours. We will also discuss the process of creating an isolation coat, and how varnishing can contribute to an oil paint look. Oil painting with Susan Statham As a new student you begin with a portrait that requires only 5 oil colours to complete. You may then choose your next subject. Class size is limited to 5 students Monday 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm A teacher for over twenty years, Susan Statham is a graduate of the Ottawa School of Art, Algonquin College, the National Portrait Academy & the University Of Waterloo. She also attended workshops in Florence Italy & the Art Students League in New York. Susan is a member of the Society of Portrait Artists & is President of the Cobourg Art Club.

Studio Pottery Classes - Practically Potty Pottery Studio Each class has only three students and each student receives as much individual attention as they need. Newcomers and experienced students decide whether they would like to use the wheel or hand-build with clay, but everyone is encouraged to try the wheel.
Classes are ongoing, and you can start any time, depending on space availability. There are only three students per class and each student works at their own speed. Fees for each three hour session are: $25.00 per person, plus clay -- or $225.00 for a ten lesson block plus clay. Everything else is included (glazes, kiln firing, use of equipment; tools). There is an additional charge of $15.00 (plus GST) per bag of clay. When you first start you will find that one bag of clay lasts for three or four classes. Make a Teddy Bear, with Trish Pilon A one day class (average length 5 to 8 hours). The class includes, tracing and cutting out the fur on a sample piece, to understand the nap of the fur. Then sewing, jointing, stuffing the bear and then finishing the face. They can make a bear in either Mohair or synthetic fur, prices vary with styles of fur.
